In the world of false religions one shouldn’t be surprised to find reproduced biblical scenes grafted into the false canons, and doctrines of the impersonator. Our example today shows just such an event with Joe Smith using Christian terminology and biblical events in his golden bible.
We’ve listed each time the phrase ‘pillar of fire’ appears in the Bible. Take special notice the only time this took place was when God was leading the Israelites through the wilderness after rescuing them from their Egyptian captors.
Our last biblical reference about fire is found in the book of Acts. Luke shared events of Pentecost when cloven tongues ‘like fire’ sat upon those in attendance as they were filled with God’s Holy Spirit.
Now let’s compare these two events with Joe Smith’s writings.
The following events supposedly took place from BC 600, to the early days of Mormonism in Kirtland, OH in 1836. We have to ask –
What purpose does the story of Lehi witnessing a pillar of fire on a rock serve for Mormons like my mother?
Why did Joseph Smith copy biblical events, and claim these same things happened in the Book of Mormon, as well as with Mormons in the 19th century?
What purpose did it serve Mormons back then, and for Mormons today?
How did the Nephites receive the Holy Ghost in BC 30 when God hadn’t sent His Spirit to reside inside of men yet? See reference below for Helaman 5:23-24, 43.
Why did Smith say a pillar of fire rested upon his apostles, inferring it was an event much like Pentecost? Was this event caused from the hallucinogenic drugs they were taking before and during their ceremony? Reports of what took place that day certainly don’t sound biblical. Apparently, articles from that time documented Smith and company had easy access to three types of natural hallucinogenics common to the area. Their ‘visions’ of chariots of fire, pillars of fire, and circles of fire, all led to the Pentecostal type meeting they held at the Kirtland Temple in 1836.
