Contradictions in Joseph Smith’s Polygamy Revelations

06 January

Oh, what a tangled web we weave…

Today’s Mormon references are a classic example of how a member of the LDS Church can easily be confused.

Nonstop doctrinal contradictions can cause even the most ardent of clear headed thinkers to do a double take.

1831 – One Wife Only

“Revelation through Joseph Smith to Sidney Rigdon, Parley P. Pratt, and Leman Copley, Kirtland, Ohio, March 1831. History of the Church 1:167-169.”

Doctrine and Covenants 49:16; “Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, and all this that the earth might answer the end of its creation”.

1843 – Polygamy Mandate Introduced

“Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant and the principle of plural marriage. Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, evidence indicates that some of the principles involved in this revelation were known by the Prophet as early as 1831.” [emp. mine]

Doctrine and Covenants 132:4; “For behold, I reveal unto you a new and an everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory.”

The Church just so happened to slip in a vital piece of information without bringing too much attention to Joe Smith’s shenanigans. While it’s officially recorded he implemented polygamy in 1843, it was well known he had at least 44 wives by this time.

Whatever happened to following what God said?

Lev. 18:18 :Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.”

And lest we forget, twelve years earlier he proclaimed God told him they shouldn’t have more than one wife at a time.

One last thing to take note of is the way they’ve referred to him as, ‘Joseph the Prophet’. Using this terminology elevates him to a godhood status. They’ve not referred to any other prophet in this way which only emphasizes that without Joe Smith, there would be no salvation.

Please, pray for those who attended the Sunday school classes through 2017 when their curriculum was focused on the Doctrine and Covenants. We’re praying those who went to the classes will stop to think about what they’ve learned, and start putting the pieces together of how the Church has lied to them!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
