Christianity v. Mormonism

25 February

Christianity & MormonismOver the past few weeks we’ve received a lot of e-mails and/or comments on our blog and site expressing disdain for the work we do at the ministry. Some have been nice, which is always great!mailbag

My response to rude comments is this –

Why should Christians stand by and listen to the comments without defending the work God gave us to do?

The e-mails & comments are the reason for our topic today. I’ve hear from people all the time that Mormons would never say mean things about Christianity, but is this true? The whole reason Mormonism exists today is based on Joseph Smith’s rejection of the biblical Jesus.

I grew up being instilled with the hatred LDS leaders have shown towards Christianity, and once I became a Christian it shamed me to read what they’ve taught through their history. The examples we’ve listed today just barely skim the surface of what’s out there, but for the sake of time and space right now, we’re limiting ourselves to what’s here.

As you read through these ask yourself –

Are these the words of a godly person?

Over the next few days we’ll be adding our resources to this subject – be sure to watch out for the updates!

Additionally, as for the e-mails…I’ve only listed 4 examples from the dozens of notes we’ve received since December – the reason why? The majority of others are filled with foul language not suitable for the audience we speak to, and quite frankly, doesn’t serve any  purpose other than to glamorize potty mouths.

To that end, if you have something to say on our sites, or in e-mails, we’re more than happy to publish what you have to say as long as it stands up to our guidelines. Be nice, no swearing, don’t lie.

There are ongoing discussions without the foul language over on our regular site you can check out here, and here for 2 examples. For the record, I don’t agree with most of the comments, as they’re coming from a Mormon’s standpoint, but I’m using this to show you don’t have to make a sailor blush with your vocabulary.

All righty folks – here’s the first installment of quotes by LDS leaders and their opinions of Christianity. Remember beloved, we need to pray for these people!

And pray for the woman in our first e-mail listing here –

Just read  some of your diatribe explaining why you think that  Mormons are not Christians.

What a crock!!  You must really be a nutjob!!  Get a life!

In response to our posts on January 2016 Visiting Teaching Message & December 2015 Visiting Teaching Message, we received the following comments from ‘anonymous’ who thinks we should ‘move on with life’, or that we should stop picking on other Christian religions.

why do you spend your time tearing down something instead of building something of your own. If you don’t like what they believe in, respect their right to believe it and move on with your life. Its like you are full of poison and you just want to spread hate. Live and let live. Find your own peace. Its a shame you take so much time on this instead of expressing your own views and beliefs. If what you have to say is so important prove it on its own merits instead of comparing it to others. Just saying.

Stop attacking other religions. Spend your time being what a religious person should be. Love your neighbour as yourself. All Christian religions have good intent and purpose. Attacking other religions should not be one of them.

Christianity v. Mormonism

George Quayle Cannon

False Christianity

Journal of Discourses 24:185; “I do not wish to say anything in relation to other forms of religion; I do not know that it is necessary that I should do so; but no thinking man can admit that Christianity so-called—I call it a false Christianity, untrue to its name—satisfies the wants of humanity at the present time.” – George Q. Cannon, July 15, 1883

So-called Christians Persecute True Religion

Christians Persecute True Religion

Gospel Truth, pg 333; “Where false religion prevails, men persecute and oppress those who are not of their own faith; they are frequently fierce, cruel, pitiless and do not feel content unless they are waging war against those who possess pure religion or who are striving to obtain a knowledge of it. The history of false religion is the history of crime and the most dreadful and shocking persecutions of men by their fellows.” – George Q. Cannon

Gospel Principles

Christianity  No Longer Exists

Gospel Principles, pp. 87-93; “Because of wickedness and apostasy, the apostolic authority and priesthood keys were also taken from the earth. The organization that Jesus Christ had established no longer existed, and confusion resulted. More and more error crept into Church doctrine, and soon the dissolution of the Church was complete. … The Roman emperor adopted this false Christianity as the state religion. This church was very different from the church Jesus organized. It taught that God was a being without form or substance. … Many of the ordinances were changed because the priesthood and revelation were no longer on the earth…”

Kent P. Jackson

Satan sits in the place of God in Christianity

“Early Signs of the Apostasy,” Ensign, December 1984, p. 9; “To say that Satan sits in the place of God in Christianity after the time of the Apostles is not to say that all that is in it is satanic…Still, ‘the power of God unto salvation’ (Rom. 1:16 ) is absent from all but the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which the Lord himself has proclaimed to be ‘the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth (D&C 1:30). Satan’s goal of hindering many of God’s children from returning to their Father’s glory is thus realized.” – Kent P. Jackson

Heber C. Kimball

Christians are Whoremasters

Journal of Discourses 5:89-90; “Christians—those poor, miserable priests brother Brigham was speaking about—some of them are the biggest whoremasters there are on the earth, and at the same time preaching righteousness to the children of men. The poor devils, they could not get up here and preach an oral discourse, to save themselves from hell; they are preaching their fathers’ sermons—preaching sermons that were written a hundred years before they were born.” – Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, July 26, 1857

Spencer W. Kimball

Christianity Overshadowed with Limitless Pomposity

Gospel of the Doctrines Student Manual, pp. 59-60; “In the early centuries of the Christian era, the apostasy came not through persecution, but by relinquishment of faith caused by the superimposing of a man-made structure upon and over the divine program. Many men with no pretense nor claim to revelation, speaking without divine authority or revelation, depending only upon their own brilliant minds, but representing as they claim the congregations of the Christians and in long conference and erudite councils, sought the creation process to make a God which all could accept.

The brilliant minds with their philosophies, knowing much about the Christian traditions and the pagan philosophies, would combine all elements to please everybody. They replaced the simple ways and program of the Christ with spectacular rituals, colorful display, impressive pageantry, and limitless pomposity, and called it christianity. They had replaced the glorious, divine plan of exaltation of Christ with an elaborate, colorful, man-made system. They seemed to have little idea of totally dethroning the Christ, nor terminating the life of God, as in our own day, but they put together an incomprehensible God idea. (1966; Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p. 425)”

Long Period When Gospel Not Available

Gospel of the Doctrines Student Manual, pp. 59-60; “This is not a continuous church, nor is it one that has been reformed or redeemed. It has been restored after it was lost. It was lost-the gospel with its powers and blessings-sometime after the Savior’s crucifixion and the loss of his apostles. The laws were changed, the ordinances were changed, and the everlasting covenant was broken that the Lord Jesus Christ gave to his people in those days. There was a long period of centuries when the gospel was not available to people on this earth, because it had been changed. Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, 423”

Bruce R. McConkie

Christianity is a false cult

The Millennial Messiah: The Second Coming of the Son of Man, p. 48; “

A false Christ…is a false system of worship, a false church, a false cult that says: ‘Lo, here is salvation; here is the doctrine of Christ. Come and believe thus and so, and ye shall be saved.’…We hear the voice of false Christs when we hear the Athanasian Creed proclaim that ‘whosoever will be saved’ must believe that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are incomprehensible and uncreated, that they form a Trinity of equals, who are not three Gods but one God, and not one God but three Gods, and that unless we so believe we ‘cannot be saved,’ and ‘shall perish everlastingly.’” – Bruce McConkie

Christianity Broke the Everlasting Covenant

Millennial Messiah 3:436-437; “Has no one read the promises made of old that the Lord Jesus cannot return “except there come a falling away first” (2 Thess. 2:1-12); that before that day, “darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people” (Isa.60:2; D&C 112:23-24); that the whole earth “is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant” (Isa. 24:5)?” – Bruce McConkie

False Creeds Make False Churches

The Mortal Messiah: From Bethlehem to Calvary 1:30, Chapter 2 Footnote, p. 504; “False creeds make false churches. There is no salvation in believing a lie. Every informed, inspired, and discerning person is revolted by the absurdities and scripture-defying pronouncements in the creeds of Christendom…

Does anyone really suppose that the sects of modern Christendom-with their silks and robes and rituals; with their notions of a salvation without works and by grace alone; with neither signs, nor miracles, nor apostles, nor prophets, nor revelation-does anyone really believe such a Christianity is the same as that of Jesus and Peter and Paul?” – Bruce R. McConkie

Orson Pratt

No Christians on Earth for Centuries

No Christian Churches on Earth for Centuries – Orson Pratt, 1872

Christian Baptism not Legitimate

Journal of Discourses 16:175; “Not one among the hundreds of thousands who have joined this Church, since its rise in 1830, has been admitted on his or her old baptism. Why not? Because we do not believe in their old baptisms. The Lord has commanded his servants to go forth and preach the Gospel, and to baptize all who come unto them for baptism. If we find a sincere man, who has gone through a correct form of baptism—and many  have, such as the Campbellites and the Baptists—we tell him that, if he believes in our doctrine, he must he baptized over again, because his former baptism was administered by a man who denied new revelation, and who did not believe that any had been given, later than that contained in the New Testament.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, August 31, 1873

Christians are Pagans

Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses 14:346; This class of men, calling themselves Christian, uniting with the various forms of the pagan religion, adopting many of their ceremonies and institutions, became very popular, and finally some of the pagans embraced Christianity and were placed, as it were, upon the throne, and what they termed Christianity became very popular indeed. How long has this order of things existed, this dreadful apostacy, this class of people that pronounced themselves Zion, or Christians, without any of the characteristics of Zion? It has existed for some sixteen or seventeen centuries.” – Salt Lake City, March 10, 1872

Parley Parker Pratt

Christian God is Powerless

Key to the Science of Theology, p. 34; “There never has been a visible idol worshiped among men, which was so powerless as this “God without body parts or passions.” The god of Egypt, the crocodile, could destroy. The images of different nations could be felt and seen. The Peruvian god, the sun, could diffuse its genial warmth, light and influence. But not so with the God without “body, parts or passions.” – Parley Parker Pratt

Christianity Lost Its Magnetic Purposes

Key to the Science of Theology, pp. 103-104; “The modern world, called “Christian,” claims to have perpetuated the system called “Christianity”, while, at the same time, it declares, that the miraculous gifts of the Spirit have ceased.

With as much propriety it might be contended, that the magnet had been perpetuated, but had lost its magnetic properties; that water was perpetuated with all its virtues, but had lost its power to quench thirst, or seek its own level; that fire was still fire, but had lost its heat.

How, we inquire, can Christianity have been perpetuated, while its virtues, its legitimate powers, its distinguishing features, its very life and essence have ceased from among men? Or, of what use is it if it does exist?” – Parley P. Pratt

Christianity is ‘The Great Whore that Sitteth Upon Many Waters’

Key to the Science of Theology, 1978, p. 106; “The false and corrupt institutions, and still more corrupt practices of ‘Christendom,’ have had a downward tendency in the generations of man for many centuries. …The overthrow of those ancient degenerate races is a type of that which now awaits the nations called ‘Christian,’ or in other words, ‘the great whore that sitteth upon many waters….” – Parley P. Pratt

Joseph Fielding Smith

Lord Raised Up Honorable Men for the Reformation

Doctrines of Salvation 1:175; “In the days of greatest spiritual darkness, when evil raged, the Lord raised up honorable men, who rebelled against the tyranny of the [adversary] and his emissaries. . . .” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Existence of Evil Proves there was No Christianity

Doctrines of Salvation, 3:36-37; “The Lord has declared that unless we are one we are not his, and where his gospel has taken hold of the people there cannot be such bitterness of feeling, contention and bloodshed, as we find over the greater portion of the earth today. The present condition of the world is an incontrovertible evidence that the power and purity of the gospel is not to be found in their churches and that they are not in fellowship with the Lord.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

True Church Ceased to be on Earth

Man, His Origin and Destiny, p. 467; “Every Latter-day Saint knows that following the death of the apostles, Paul’s prophecy was fulfilled, for there were many ‘grievous wolves’ that entered the flock, and men arose ‘speaking perverse things,’ so that the doctrines were changed and the true Church of Jesus Christ ceased to be on the earth. For this reason there had to come a restoration of the Church and a new revelation and bestowal of divine authority. The Church of Jesus Christ and the Holy Scriptures are, therefore, not responsible for the changed doctrines and unscientific teachings of those times, when uninspired ecclesiastics controlled the thinking of the people.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Joseph Smith, Jr.

Everyone but Joseph Smith is a Liar

HC 6:478; “All men are liars who say they are of the true Church without the revelations of Jesus Christ and the Priesthood of Melchizedek, which is after the order of the Son of God. (Sermon in a meeting in the Grove, east of the Nauvoo Temple, June 16, 1844)” – Joseph Smith, Jr.

All of Christianity was Wrong

Joseph Smith—History 1:19; “I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt…”

James Talmage

God was Silent for Seventeen Hundred Years

Jesus the Christ, p. 745; “For over seventeen hundred years on the eastern hemisphere, and for more than fourteen centuries on the western, there appears to have been silence between the heavens and the earth. Of direct revelation from God to man during this long interval, we have no authentic record. As already shown, the period of apostolic ministry on the eastern continent probably terminated before the dawn of the second century of the Christian era. The passing of the apostles was followed by the rapid development of a universal apostasy as had been foreseen and predicted.

In the accomplishment of this great falling away, external and internal causes cooperated. Among the disintegrating forces acting from without, the most effective was the persistent persecution to which the saints were subjected, incident to both Judaistic and pagan opposition. Vast numbers who had professed membership and many who had been officers in the ministry deserted the Church; while a few were stimulated to greater zeal under the scourge of persecution. The general effect of opposition from the outside-of external causes of decline in faith and works considered as a whole-was the defection of individuals, resulting in a widespread apostasy from the Church. But immeasurably more serious was the result of internal dissension, schism and disruption, whereby an absolute apostasy of the Church from the way and word of God was brought about.” –  James Talmage

Internal Mistakes Caused Primitive Church’s Apostasy

Jesus the Christ, pp. 748-749; “The most important of the internal causes by which the apostasy of the Primitive Church was brought about may be thus summarized: (1) The corrupting of the simple doctrines of the gospel of Christ by admixture with so-called philosophic systems. (2) Unauthorized additions to the prescribed rites of the Church and the introduction of vital alterations in essential ordinances. (3) Unauthorized changes in Church organization and government.” – James Talmage

John Taylor

Christianity Filled with Imbecility

The Government of God, p. 92; “There is no more similarity between christianity, as it now exists, with all its superstitions, corruptions, jargons, contentions, divisions, weakness, and imbecility, and this KINGDOM OF GOD, as spoken of in the Scriptures, than there is between light and darkness; and it would no more compare with things to come, than an orange would compare with the earth, or a taper with the glorious luminary of day.” – John Taylor

Christians Know Nothing about God, the Veriest of Fools

Journal of Discourses 13:225; “What does the Christian world know about God? Nothing…Why so far as the things of God are concerned, they are the veriest of fools…” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City. May 6, 1870

Brigham Young

Christian World Groveling in Darkness

Journal of Discourses 5:73; “They have not got the kingdom of God, which binds the people together. They are ignorant of it, though we have traveled, barefooted and almost naked, to preach it to them; and I say that they are to be pitied…When the light came to me, I saw that all the so-called Christian world was groveling in darkness.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, July 26, 1857

Christians are Heathens

Journal of Discourses 8:171; “The Christian world, so called, are heathens as to their knowledge of the salvation of God.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, September 16, 1860

New Testament Christianity Doesn’t Exist

Journal of Discourses, 10:230; “Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, July 8, 1863

Christianity is Like a Ship without a Rudder

Journal of Discourses 10:265; “The religion of God embraces every fact that exists in all the wide arena of nature, while the religions of men consist of theory devoid of fact, or of any true principle of guidance; hence the professing Christian world are like a ship upon a boisterous ocean without rudder, compass, or pilot, and are tossed hither and thither by every wind of doctrine.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 6, 1863

True Gospel Taken from the Earth

Journal of Discourses 15:126; “…The Gospel of the kingdom that Jesus undertook to establish in his day and the Priesthood were taken from the earth.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, August 11, 1872
