Brigham Young: Cut the Throats of Persecutors

10 November

Journal of Discourses 2:311 “…in regard to those who have persecuted this people and driven them to the mountains, I intend to meet them on their own grounds. It was asked this morning how we could obtain redress for our wrongs; I will tell you how it could be done, we could take the same law they have taken, viz., mobocracy, and if any miserable scoundrels come here, cut their throats.” — Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, July 8, 1855

Romans 12:19 “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Imagine being within earshot of this prophetic insight. Our hearts break whenever we read the ungodly words of these church leaders.

Brigham’s words weren’t only meant to bolster egos of Mormons listening to his diatribe, but it also fostered fear into the psyches of those in attendance. Make no mistake, this was a threat to anyone thinking about leaving the Church.

Also keep in mind this event didn’t take place in a vacuum. Its effects were passed on down from one generation to the next.

We have to ask: would Jesus do this?

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
