Book of Mormon Geography Problems

17 November

Holley1Leaving Mormonism and all it entails is a process filled with surprises, shock, disappointments and relief to name a few. Just when you think you’ve heard it all and nothing else can surprise you, a new discovery in Mormon teachings or history rears its ugly head.

The article here is case in point. I’ll never forget the first time I saw maps from the era of Joseph Smith’s day.  I sat in shock as I read names of valleys and townships that were eerily similar to names I knew were in the Book of Mormon.

Below are two maps – one is for the Book of Mormon geography, the other is a map from the days of Joseph Smith.  Don’t forget this was Smith’s stomping ground. It’s where he was born and raised so there’s no mistaking that he didn’t know the area well.

The Book of Mormon is a story of a group of people who left the Middle East circa 600 BC and landed somewhere in North, South or Central America.  As they expanded their empire over the 1,100+ years of existence it’s assumed they migrated north up the Atlantic seaboard where they supposedly buried golden plates that held nondescript stories of their history and the many wars they fought.

Of course this is speculation as is all of Smith’s inspired writings because there is no original text or model from which to draw reliable information. What we do know for sure are the names and locations of real geographical maps and the recorded histories of North, Central and South America.

The reason people have focused on the Book of Mormon people landing and residing on the North American Continent is because of what Smith wrote in his testimony.

Joseph Smith Testimony 1:34; “He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants.”

From his statement we should be able to go to any map of the North American Continent and glean information on names of townships, regions, mountains and the overall layout of the land.  And this is exactly what one man did.

The two maps below came from a book written by the late Vernal Holley called “Book of Mormon Authorship: A Closer Look”.  Mr. Holley composed the Book of Mormon map through the data he retrieved in Joseph’s description of the area in the Book of Mormon and compared it with a map of the US and Canada from Joseph’s day.

In the Book of Mormon you’ll read names like Lehi, Alma and Teancum who were supposedly real people that played integral parts in the lives of the people in this storyline.  On the modern map you’ll see similar names of Alma and the Lehigh Valley which of course are place names in the region where Joseph Smith lived.  As a side note – in the area where Smith lived all one has to do is open a history book to find the name of an Indian chief who fought for the British Army in the War of 1812.  His name? Tecumseh.

In all there are over 200 place names that closely resemble or they’re exactly the same that we find in the Book of Mormon.  It’s much like our investigation in the Demonic and Ungodly Names in the Book of Mormon investigation you can find on our site here.  All these names are just too much of a coincidence to be taken seriously.

Joseph Smith’s book is an apparent work of fiction filled with stories from his own imagination and bits and pieces of other people’s work, including the Bible.  Sadly, many people fell for his shenanigans and placed not only their earthly possessions in his hands, but their souls as well.

Below the maps you’ll also find a list of some names found in the Book of Mormon and the geographical area of southeastern Canada and the northeastern US.  It’s hard to swallow the story of Joseph Smith or believe the names found in the Book of Mormon originated from any real people or places.

If you’re LDS we’re praying you’ll look over these things and do further research to investigate what we’ve presented here.

We provide information like this because you deserve to know the truth and you need to know these things are not from God. God doesn’t operate this way!

Our hearts grieve over the lies this man and his friends told to people. We want you to know that if you’re a Mormon there are people praying for you to know the truth and that you’ll come to a saving knowledge of Jesus.

God loves you no matter who you are or what you’ve done – He sent His Son Jesus to die specifically for you!  If you want more info don’t hesitate to contact us through the site here or our toll free number.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

I’m critiquing the BOM and take Alma to be South America.
