Bible Facts You Can Trust

25 September

Today we’re obviously doing things a little differently!

My ad hoc post for the day was inspired by the movie my family and I watched last night; ‘The Case for Christ’. While I’ve relied on Lee Stroebel’s great book numerous times over the years, it was equally appreciated to see the background of what prompted him to write it.

Facts

Mr. Stroebel was a true skeptic, just as all of us have been before we bowed the knee to Jesus. However, the little issue of making sure  you know why you do, or don’t believe, should take a front row seat to the motives of everyone staking a claim for their position.

Today, facts about the Bible are easy enough to obtain with a quick search on Bing, or Google, anyone can retrieve the info they need in the blink of an eye. Unlike the arduous task of interviewing people like Mr. Stroebel did, or the years of research I performed before the internet, whatever you want to know is available in the comfort of your own home!

As I watched that movie last night, thoughts of my beloved people (Mormons), kept racing through my head. In light of that, here are a few of the awesome facts about God’s word.

To the Mormons:

I pray you thoughtfully ponder and give serious thought to the few tidbits of info below. As they always say, be intellectually honest with yourself.

To the Christians:

I implore you to share the info below with a Mormon. Today, or even tomorrow! It doesn’t have to be forced upon them, but in a loving manner, share the factual (truthful) info and let them have the last word. You having the last word will kill your witness, so walk away.

Consider the facts from Creation.com who provided the following info on extant writings –

‘The NT was completely written by baptized Jews 1 in the 1st century AD. We have at least 24,000 manuscripts of the NT [Ed. note: 5,824 in the original Greek, according to the latest count by NT scholar Dan Wallace], the earliest of which are dated within 100 years or so of its actual composition. The earliest known manuscript is the John Rylands papyrus fragment of John’s Gospel known as P52, containing John 18:31–3337–38, dated to c. AD 125. Compare this to other great works (MSS = manuscripts):

So, by applying the tightest standards scholars can muster (without eliminating all the other classical works), we can conclude that the NT we have is a trustworthy copy of the original.2 NT scholar F.F. Bruce (1919–1990) wrote:

“The evidence for our New Testament writings is ever so much greater than the evidence for many writings of classical authors, the authenticity of which no-one dreams of questioning. And if the New Testament were a collection of secular writings, their authenticity would generally be regarded as beyond all doubt.”3’

Now, if you’ll believe the records of Cesar, or Homer are trustworthy copies, why wouldn’t you believe the 24,000 NT records?

As Lee Stroebel demonstrated in his book, there are three verbs we must face, and ultimately accept, in just one verse of the Bible.

John 1:12 “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

What are the three verbs? Believe, receive, become.

We invite you dear Mormon, to become a child of God.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
