Because of Joseph Smith…

28 November

First Thessalonians 5:18 “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Today we’re looking at the LDS ‘Talk of the Week’, we found on the LDS website.

henry eyring General Conference, ‘Gratitude on the Sabbath Day,’ October 2016

The early Saints were given a revelation about how to keep the Sabbath day and how to fast and pray.1

They, and we, were told by the Lord how to worship and give thanks on the Sabbath. As you can tell, what matters most is the love we feel for the givers of the gifts. Here are the Lord’s words of how to give thanks and how to love on the Sabbath:

“I give unto them a commandment, saying thus: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy might, mind, and strength; and in the name of Jesus Christ thou shalt serve him. …

“Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things.

“Thou shalt offer a sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in righteousness, even that of a broken heart and a contrite spirit.”2

Why did Smith plagiarize Jesus and then add to His word? In the gospel of Luke it says –

Luke 10:27 “And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”

Mr. Eyring went on to warn the Mormon people there’s nothing else that gets the Mormon god more angry than when the they don’t express proper gratitude to Him.

And then the Lord goes on to warn of danger should we fail to thank Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as the givers of the gifts: “And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments.”3

Is this really the worst sin man can commit? Is this how the God of the Bible reacts?

After sharing stories of the many things he’d experienced in life, Mr. Eyring reminded everyone that because of Joe Smith, everyone has the opportunity to partake of the Sacrament which is a mandatory work for salvation.

“…Because of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the restored gospel, another blessing we can count is that we have the opportunity to take the sacrament each week—prepared, blessed, and passed by authorized servants of God. We can be grateful when the Holy Spirit confirms to us that the words of the sacrament prayers, offered by those authorized priesthood holders, are honored by our Heavenly Father.

Once again, here’s another contradiction! On November 15, 2016, church historian, Richard Bushman, told students at BYU their testimonies must rest on Jesus, not Joseph!

Mr. Eyring’s last statement was probably the most telling in this speech. He told Mormons if they obey and show gratitude, they’ll be able to withstand feelings of doubt about the ‘truth’.

You will be fortified against temptation and against feelings of doubt about the truth. You will find joy in the Sabbath. I so promise you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen.” – Henry B. Eyring [emp. mine]

Why is the topic of a Mormon’s doubt topping the list of focus items lately? The Church must obviously think there’s trouble brewing amongst the congregants…

The Bible has dozens of verses telling us we should worship the Lord, so this directive from the Church is nothing new. With that said, we’re wondering why Mr. Eyring has made God sound like a malevolent God waiting in the wings to zap someone for not thanking Him in the manner the Church requires.

One last item of interest.

Psalm 100:5 tells us God’s mercy is everlasting and His truth endures for all generations. Why then, did Smith feel it necessary to teach otherwise?

Psalm 100:5 “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; And his truth endureth to all generations.”
