The Apostles Creed

27 February

Symbolum Apostolorum (Apostle’s Creed)

Cross 3This creed arose from the earliest teachings of the apostles, but it’s not to be attributed to them directly. This creed dates back to the mid sixth century (circa 542 AD) and was used as a simple baptismal confession. There are several variations to this creed, but they’re all the same in essence and content.

It was written in question form to which the person being baptized would answer affirmatively. Prior versions of this can be traced back to a document from 200 AD which contained the Roman Baptismal liturgy. This particular form dates from the 8th century.

     descended into hell:

5.  The third day he rose again from the dead:

6.  He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the

     Father Almighty:

7.  From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:

8.  I believe in the Holy Ghost:

9.  I believe a holy catholic church: the communion of saints:

10. The forgiveness of sins:

1l. The resurrection of the body:

12. And the life everlasting. Amen.

Also note: when the word “catholic” is used it’s not in reference to the Roman Catholic Church. The word “catholic” means universal and was used in this genre as referring to the whole body of Christ.
