Anachronism Destroys BoM Credibility

19 January

God’s word makes things pretty clear. In the 10th year of King Zedekiah’s reign, Jeremiah was thrown into prison as Jerusalem fell in the Babylonian takeover ~

Jeremiah 32:1-2 “The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house.” [emp. added]

According to historical records, the 1st year of Zedekiah’s reign took place in bc 598-597. His reign ended with the fall of Jerusalem which has been documented c. bc 587-586.

This historical fact isn’t a problem, unless of course you’re reading history from an aberrant storyline such as Joe Smith’s inspired works. Check out the mass confusion found in the opening scenes of their signature canon, the Book of Mormon.

The following claim tells us when Lehi supposedly packed up his family and left Jerusalem….

I Nephi 1:4 “For it came to pass in the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, (my father, Lehi, having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days); and in that same year there came many prophets, prophesying unto the people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed.” [emp. added]

Remember, this had to take place c. bc 598.

1 Nephi 2:2 “And it came to pass that the Lord commanded my father, even in a dream, that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness.”

Years later, we find Nephi and family still mourning the fact Jeremiah was thrown into prison ~

I Nephi 7:14 “For behold, the Spirit of the Lord ceaseth soon to strive with them; for behold, they have rejected the prophets, and Jeremiah have they cast into prison. And they have sought to take away the life of my father, insomuch that they have driven him out of the land.”

In order for Smith’s narrative to work, one would have to believe Lehi’s family had already been living in the wilderness during the first year of Zedekiah’s reign.

However, Nephi’s already told us his father Lehi had always lived in Jerusalem (1 Nephi 1:4). They didn’t live in the wilderness until we get to I Nephi 17:4.

“And we did sojourn for the space of many years, yea, even eight years in the wilderness.”

By the time this took place, they’d already traipsed back and forth to Jerusalem a couple of times, and beheaded Laban while stealing the ‘gold plates’ from the temple 1 Nephi 4:12.

So our questions for today are as follows ~

How can anyone trust the BoM, if Smith couldn’t  get his own story straight?

Why should someone believe this ‘work’ is from the God of the Bible who is perfect, holy, and trustworthy?

Where in the Bible can we find a similar scene played out showing this is how God operates?

If you’re LDS, we pray that you’ll give yourself the time this deserves so you can come to an undefiled decision.

Why would  you want to worship a god who contradicts himself, and confuses those who follow him – this means you!

Know that we’re praying diligently for you dear one. We don’t publish these things to demean, or belittle you – we honestly care for your soul and pray you[‘ll come to a saving knowledge of Christ Jesus, and Him crucified.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle
