An Overview of Polygamy and Mormon Church Leaders
An Overview of Polygamy and Mormon Church Leaders
Nauvoo Roots of Mormon Polygamy 1841-1846; A Preliminary Demographic Report, George D. Smith, pg. 32; “Over the six years when polygamy was practiced in Nauvoo, 1841 to 1846, Smith, Kimball, and Young were the most-married men in Nauvoo; they accounted, in fact, for 117 of the 434 Nauvoo polygamous marriages, over one-fourth of the marriages by the community of 153 polygamous husbands. After Nauvoo, Young married fifteen more wives and Kimball married eight. At the funeral of his wife, Vilate, Kimball, pointing to the coffin, said: “There lies a woman who has given me forty-four wives.””
1,461 kids
58 men
552 wives
=
9.517 wives per husband
25.189 kids per husband
2.646 kids per wife
The information below has been taken from a variety of sources and ironically enough, there are no two sources with the exact same information about each husband, wife or kid involved. We’ve done our best at trying to determine just how many wives and kids there were for each husband and will be adding to this list as time goes on so if you’re looking for other references in the future, be sure to check us out!
While I do have a healthy interest in this subject matter, I also feel that I’ve been as objective as possible by listing all of my findings, whether good or bad. The entire time I was compiling this I couldn’t stop thinking of my own family and what their living arrangements must have been like.
As you’ll see in the charts below one of the husbands actually hid his wives in the basement during raids by the government and it made me wonder what my great-great grandfather did with his five wives during the raids. Where were the kids and what were they thinking? Were they scared, crying, quiet, in shock or angry? Did my grandfather hide like all the other men did? What actions of his defined their future behavior?
I found that on personal family websites there seemed to be a lot of pride for their ancestor by listing all wives as compared to some of the Mormon Church’s information that wasn’t as forthcoming all the time.
